The route

Collserola is the home loop. The park starts where Barcelona ends - a forested ridge of pine and holm oak wrapping the city's western flank - and from the Old Port you can climb out of the grid and into it within an hour.

The first peak is Sant Pere Màrtir, 389 metres of suburban myth crowned with the radio masts every Barcelona rider sees from the beach. From the summit the route turns west and follows the spine of the massif through Turó de l'Espinagosa, where the city drops away and the inland valleys open below — quiet pine and the Llobregat running south.

The high point is Puig Madrona, a steep punch on a loose track to 356 metres. From there it's a long traverse back along the upper roads — past the foot of Tibidabo, the church on its summit visible the whole way — and a fast descent through Esplugues to the coast.

Bring water. Collserola is a heat trap in July and August and the south-facing tracks hold sun all day; ride this one in the cool half of the year. Watch for wild boar at dusk in the shoulder seasons. They aren't aggressive but they will surprise you.
